DEADLINE: Monday, August 14, 2017 at 12:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time

In 2016, 6 Degrees and the Institute for Canadian Citizenship launched the 6 Degrees Junior Fellowship, creating a special opportunity for young leaders from around the world to make a change in their own community through the creation and implementation of projects on inclusion and citizenship. With an inaugural group of 10 Junior Fellows from five countries, these outstanding young people were chosen based on their dedication to fostering inclusion and building citizenship in their respective communities. Applications are now open for 10+ outstanding young leaders from around the world to form the 2017 cohort of our 6 Degrees Junior Fellows.

Why Apply?

The incoming cohort of 6 Degrees Junior Fellows will benefit from:

Developing their leadership capacity in an environment that welcomes risk-taking, vulnerability, and innovation;
Celebrating the necessity for, and urgency of, inclusion in an unsettled age;
Workshopping community projects under the guidance of 6 Degrees staff;
Engaging with experienced mentors who are committed to equipping the next generation of leaders with the perspective necessary for success;
Building their global professional network with like-minded peers who share their dedication to inclusion and citizenship; and,
Participating in 6 Degrees Citizen Space 2017, a global hub connecting thinkers and doers who are committed to driving the global conversation on inclusion and citizenship.
Eligibility Criteria

As part of our commitment to inclusion, the 6 Degrees Junior Fellowship does not discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender expression, or marital status. 6 Degrees welcomes applicants from all backgrounds and fields, including active community members, artists, academics, policymakers, educators, and corporate professionals working on inclusion and citizenship. This program is designed to support emerging leaders and their projects, therefore we invite applications from individuals under the age of 30 (born on or after September 25, 1987).

As part of their fellowship, each 6 Degrees Junior Fellow will receive:

An Inclusive Pass to participate in all sessions at 6 Degrees Citizen Space 2017 (September 25-27, 2017)
All travel and accommodation costs related to participation in 6 Degrees Toronto, Canada
A $2,000 CAD grant to support their project dedicated toward inclusion
We regret we are unable to cover other travel-related expenses, including application fees for passports or visas.

Fellowship Benefits and Expectations

In addition to connecting with likeminded peers through the fellowship, and the broader 6 Degrees community, Junior Fellows will gain access to an extensive global network of leaders. They will join the Junior Fellow alumni network and be offered the opportunity to foster positive relationships with designated mentors.

Once selected, Junior Fellows will be expected to participate at 6 Degrees Citizen Space 2017 (September 25-27) and to make meaningful contributions toward building the Junior Fellows’ global community year-round. In addition to presenting their project proposal, they will be expected to take the opportunity to workshop and improve the impact and sustainability of their project whilst in Toronto. Junior Fellows are also expected to serve as ambassadors for 6 Degrees, using in-person, digital, and social media channels to champion inclusion.

The term of the fellowship runs for six months (September 2017 – February 2018), during which Junior Fellows will be expected to participate in regular check-ins and updates with 6 Degrees staff about the status of their project. Upon the completion of the fellowship term, Fellows will submit a final report detailing the results and impact of their project.

Fundamentally, the 6 Degrees Junior Fellowship is about connecting young leaders who are dedicated to building truly inclusive communities around the world. More than anything else, the Junior Fellows are both the legacy and the future of 6 Degrees. They represent the breadcrumbs that each 6 Degrees Citizen Space will leave behind. And with their leadership, they embody the optimism that inclusion needs in order to become a reality. By identifying, cultivating, and channeling the dynamism of the Junior Fellows, we are amplifying 6 Degrees beyond our borders year-round.

Diversity is a reality. Inclusion is a choice. We choose inclusion.
